Introducing Zion Wildlife Gardens Barbary Lions
Zion Wildlife Gardens is the proud guardian of 13 rare Barbary lions.

The rare Barbary lion (Panthera leo leo), originated from North Africa. Due to the cooler winters they developed heavier bodies and thicker manes. Their mane can extend to the middle of the back and along the stomach and can become quite dark (almost black) in colour. A large male can weigh up to 250kg and be up to 2.6m in length. They are such a striking animal that the ancient Romans used the Barbary Lion in their gladiatorial games.

Unfortunately, this 'King of Beasts' is now classified as extinct in the wild and the Barbary lion Is only bred in captivity. It is believed there are only approximately 250 alive in the world today. Zion Wildlife Gardens is now part of a specialised breeding programme to help this species remain in existence.  The lions at Zion have distinct features of the original Barbary lion and are particularly eye catching examples.

Zion, was born in 1999 and is the name sake of the park and along with his sister Shia was hand-reared. 


   

Shania Shania

Shania is our oldest lionness at Zion.  She is also mother to many of the Barbary lions who have been born at Zion.
Abdullah Abdullah

About: 

Abdullah is a very special lion he is half white lion and half Barbary lion.  He was born and raised Zion Wildlife Gardens along with his Brother Tshaka and sister Cleo.


   

Cleo Cleo
Age: 3
About: 

Cleo is a 3 year old lioness.
Tshaka Tshaka
Age: 3
About: 

Tshaka lives with his brother Abdullah and sister Cleo.  They also have one other very special friend in their enclosure Shanti one of the white tigers at Zion has been raised along side these three special lions and shares a very close bond with them.


   

Shikira Shikira
Age: 5
About: 

Shikira came to Zion Wildlife Gardens as a companion for Gandor they arrived from South Africa and quickly settled into life at Zion.  Shikira rules the roost in her enclosure, and is the only lionness brave enough to take food from a male lion!


   

Aslan Aslan
Age: 7
About: 

Aslan was born in 2002 and was from a litter of 5.  Aslan and his sister Narnia were hand reared and live together with their older sister Savannah at Zion Wildlife Gardens, Whangarei.


   

Cora Cora
Age: 7
About: 

Cora is part of the wild pride, this means she was not hand reared.  She lives with Shania her Mum and older brothers Zamba and Shumba.
Jabu Jabu
Age: 7
About: 

Jabu has 4 siblings all born at Zion - Cora, Tanza, Aslan and Narnia. 
Narnia Narnia
Age: 7
About: 

Narnia is 7 years old and was hand raised at Zion.


   

Tanza Tanza
Age: 7
About: 

Tanza is another of our wild girls.  She lives with her sister Jabu their enclosure is located between the white pride and the cheetahs.
Savannah Savannah
Age: 8
About: 

Savannah was born on the 27th January 2001.  She is a cheeky lioness who spends alot of time bossing her younger siblings Aslan and Narnia around.
Shumba Shumba
Age: 9
About: 

Shumba is part of the wild pride he shares the wild pride enclosure with his brother Zamba and Shania and Cora.
Zamba Zamba
Age: 9
About: 

Zamba is easily distinguished by his dreadlock hair-do!  He spends most of his day lounging around in the sunshine or watching his neighbour Jahdu (Royal white tiger) through the fence.
